Confidentiality.

Everything you need to know and more.

What can Eye to Eye offer?

At Eye to Eye Youth Counselling Service we believe that confidentiality is essential for both the credibility of the agency and the effectiveness of the work we carry out.

This means that, we will protect your privacy and your right to access our counselling service.

Client Confidentiality.

You will always be made aware of the level of confidentiality provided by the service.

There are however exceptional circumstances under which confidentiality would become an issue within the service.

If the counsellor has good reason for believing that you will cause serious physical harm to yourself or others.

If you are so injured or ill that immediate medical attention is necessary.

Where a young person is known to have committed an act of
Terrorism.

Parental Consent for Counselling ; Our Policy

If a young person requests counselling we never turn them away.
Young people have the right to access counselling services if they clearly understand what is involved.

We specialise in working with young people and their problems, so, we ask parents to trust us in the work we do.

If you want counselling from Eye to Eye, and are able to make that choice for yourself, then we would not ask for parental permission for you to attend.

How can we do this

The Gillick Principle

One of the key factors in deciding on levels of confidentiality is a young person's capacity to meet criteria embodied in the Gillick principle.

As a general principle it is legal and acceptable for a young person to ask for confidential counselling without parental consent providing they are of sufficient understanding and intelligence.

In secondary schools more young people are Gillick competent and a young persons use of counselling is in keeping with their development towards independence.

Parental consent may be waived for the Gillick competent young person.

Counsellors can advise young people that it is sometimes beneficial to inform parents/carers that they are receiving counselling.

About the paperwork we keep on you.

Individual young people are entitled to see all written information, e.g. Records, letters that are about to them.

Parents with concerns about the progress of counselling are not entitled to see the case notes of their Gillik competent child. This becomes a legal matter and parents must be directed to the coordinator for further information

All written information is stored within Eye to Eye in a secure place

Records will be kept for a period of five years after which they will be destroyed.
